Which headphones count reps
Automatic counting depends on the motion sensor inside the earbud. If the sensor is there, the app counts your reps and calls out the number in your ear. If it is not, everything else still works.
The app and headphones
Cornish Reps: iOS 18 and up, beta on TestFlight, free, no in-app purchases and no subscriptions. It counts reps from the motion sensor in AirPods and compatible Beats, so your phone can just sit off to the side while you train. The data stays on the phone in a single file. No account, no server.
Models with the sensor
The motion sensor is in every generation of AirPods Pro, in AirPods 3 and 4, and in AirPods Max. On the Beats side: Fit Pro, Studio Pro, Solo 4 and Powerbeats Pro 2. Easy way to tell: if the model tracks your head for spatial audio, it has the sensor.
AirPods 1 and 2 do not have it, and neither do headphones from other brands or speakers. Automatic counting will not work with them.

Without a sensor
Without the sensor you still get the programme, rest timers, stats and manual rep entry. Voice commands do not need the sensor either: start, stop, plus N, minus N. Recognition normally runs on the phone itself, and falls back to Apple's servers only when the on-device model will not start.
The hundred push-ups programme
Six weeks, three workouts a week, with a rest day in between. You start with a max test, and it picks which of the day's three columns you follow. Retests come after week two and week four, and the final one after week six. Five sets per workout, rising to eight or nine towards the end, and the last set is always max reps, no cap.
A day here means a workout, not a date: skip it and you pick up where you left off. After more than four days off the volume stops growing, and after more than ten the plan rolls back below your last real result. Two hundred sit-ups, two hundred squats, twenty pull-ups, knee push-ups and pull-ups for women, and the timed plank all work the same way.
When counting goes wrong
The detector thresholds come from recordings of real workouts with AirPods Pro. I have tested the other models less in the field. If it misses a rep mid-set, fix it by voice: plus N, minus N.
If a model is consistently off, export the recording as CSV from the counter screen and send it to hi@cornishreps.com.
In short
Do AirPods count reps on their own?
The counting is done by the app, using the motion sensor in the earbud: AirPods send head tilts and turns to iOS, and Cornish Reps counts reps from that.
Which AirPods have a motion sensor?
Every generation of AirPods Pro, AirPods 3 and 4, and AirPods Max. From Beats: Fit Pro, Studio Pro, Solo 4 and Powerbeats Pro 2. AirPods 1 and 2 do not have one.
What if my headphones have no sensor?
Then there is no automatic counting. You still get the programme, the test and retests, rest timers, stats, manual entry and voice commands.
The count is off. What do I do?
Fix it by voice during the set: plus N, minus N. If it is off every time, export the CSV from the counter screen and send it to hi@cornishreps.com.
